Check Account Health Before You Try to Upsell

Automation #12 from The Top 20 CRM Automations in the World by Lior Izik

You have an account with a stack of deals and every reason to call and sell them more. Before you pick up the phone, ask one question: is there an open support ticket sitting untouched in that account? If there is, your upsell call is about to backfire.

Automation #12 in The Top 20 CRM Automations in the World covers the account health piece — the customers you want to upgrade and upsell, and the one check that decides whether the conversation builds the relationship or breaks it.

The Problem: Selling More While the Basics Are Broken

Picture a real account: strong relationship, plenty of deals already closed. The instinct is to call and sell more. But pull up the account and you see two support tickets. One is closed. One is open — and it has been open for a while with no response.

Now play the call forward. You call to sell more, and the customer pushes back: there are already problems, you are not dealing with them, why would I spend more money with you? You have handed them a reason to say no — and worse.

Trying to upsell on top of an unattended ticket does not just cost you the new business. It can cost you the customer you already have.

The Fix: Read the Account Before You Call

The Zoho Desk extension surfaces ticket status right inside the Zoho CRM account view. From the account record, the account manager sees the open ticket before the conversation starts — not after the customer brings it up in frustration.

So instead of leading with a pitch, the account manager flips the play:

SEE — Open ticket visible on the account (Zoho Desk in CRM)

ACT — The account manager loops in the support team and gets the ticket moving

MANAGE — The account manager tells the client: “I saw it is open — we are on it.”

OUTCOME — The account manager becomes the hero of the day, not another salesperson

The account manager initiates the connection with the support team, manages the client directly, and closes the loop. That single move changes who the account manager is in the customer’s eyes — from someone trying to extract more money to someone who has their back.

Then, and Only Then, Upsell

Once you are the hero of the day, the problem is solved, and everybody is happy — that is the right time to go back and ask for more business. The sequence matters. Resolve first, satisfy the customer, then upgrade and upsell. Do it in that order and the upsell lands. Do it in reverse and you are the vendor with the nerve to sell more while ignoring the basic job.

Account health checks do not just add new revenue — they protect the revenue you already have.

This is the same principle that drives Automation #10 — Retention and Onboarding Expansion revenue comes from accounts that are healthy first. An unattended ticket is the clearest early signal that an account is not.

Why This Is a Pattern, Not an Edge Case

This shows up across the board: teams chasing more business from customers who have open, unattended tickets in the system. It is a basic problem with an outsized cost, and it is entirely avoidable when support signals are visible at the point of the sales conversation. Getting the account’s health in front of the account manager — automatically — is what makes the difference.

The wider version of this idea is the same one behind Automation #8 — the Island Problem Sales and support living on separate islands is what allows an open ticket to stay invisible to the person about to call that customer. Connecting the two systems removes the blind spot entirely.
